Ever heard of the CCC Group? Oh yes you have. After all, they are responsible for about half a dozen cafes across Melbourne, including brunch big-names such as Addict Food and Coffee, and Prospect Espresso. But today, I’m here to check out their Hawthorn stalwart – Liar Liar.

Liar Liar has been on my radar since the beginning of my blogging days, but there have been so many exciting cafe openings since then that it’s taken me a neat 5 years to make my way here. In the interim, Liar Liar has firmly established itself as a neighbourhood favourite, boasting lines out the door on a Sunday morning.

Skinny Flat White ($3.7)

When I realised that they had forgotten my coffee order, disgruntled was a mild word for how I felt. Thankfully my Skinny Flat White ($3.7) – when I finally got it – was a smooth, chocolaty Proud Mary brew that made the wait worthwhile.

Ricotta Hotcakes with Almond Cream, Berry Coulis, and Maple Syrup ($17.5)

Chris and I spotted the Ricotta Hotcakes with Almond Cream, Berry Coulis, and Maple Syrup ($17.5) at the same time, and agreed that it sounded delicious. And indeed, these gave Pancake Parlour a run for their money, and then some. The stack of hotcakes was hot and fluffy, studded with pockets of gooey ricotta. They weren’t too sweet either, which made the tangy coulis and sticky syrup the perfect indulgence.

Liar Liar Hash ($17)

The Liar Liar Hash ($17) was the best comfort breakfast ever. A huge bowl of fried potatoes, onions and bacon pieces, topped with a gooey poached egg and lemony hollandaise, served with sourdough toast – does that not sound completely amazing?

Liar Liar is the quintessential neighbourhood cafe. Mind you, the food isn’t as creative as some of the other places around town, and the decor is a little lacking, but the only thing I could really find to complain about was how warm it was inside on the day I visited. With its simple but delicious menu, reasonable prices, and a laid-back vibe, Liar Liar is good for any day of the week.

Rating: 13.5/20 – pants on fire.
This rating reflects my personal experience at the time of visit.
