Cupcake Central Workshop – Cake Pop Masterclass

I frigging love Cupcake Central. So being invited to attend their first ever cake pop making class was pretty sweet, literally.
The 12 of us were ushered in at 2pm sharp. Hands were washed, introductions were made (hola Jan and Daisy!), and restraint was exercised against eating all the sweets already laid out on the table, ready to decorate some cake pops.
Sheryl, owner and founder of Cupcake Central, was all warmth and smiles as she threw a few of her fabulous Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcakes into a bowl, and mooshed them all up to make the cake pop mixture. The secret here is to have enough cream cheese frosting so it doesn’t crumble, but not so much that it won’t set (like the red velvet). We rolled six cake balls each, and they were slotted into the fridge to set.
In the meantime, Sheryl demonstrated how to dip the cake pops in chocolate so there is a glossy and even coat. It is a lot harder than it looks, and the trick is to be careful and patient, two things I am definitely not.
The bakers took over then to show us several methods of cake pop decorating, including how to make a clever little make-shift piping bag from baking paper, as well as how to drizzle pretty swirls of coloured chocolate on our cake pops. I don’t know if I’m just super clumsy (I am), but this also ended up proving to be extremely hard to do well.
Then Sheryl jumped back in to show us how she made her Hello Kitty cake pop. I couldn’t even bring myself to attempt them.
Fifteen minutes later, the cake pops were taken out of the fridge, and sticks were stuck using white chocolate as glue. A lot of the red velvet ones fell apart at this point, so they were replaced by some pre-made coffee ones instead. Once the chocolate glue dried, we were let loose, armed with our creativity and a whole bunch of sugar.
There were some beautiful cake pops being made around the bench, including a perfect little bear-pig and an elephant that almost was, until it fell apart.
Harry goes to Hogwarts he meets Ron and Hermione, McGonagall requires he play for Gryffindor
Of course, I had to make cake pops of the Harry Potter trio. I wanted to make Snape and Voldemort and Dumbledore too, but crude facial drawings can only get me so far.
Jan on the other hand clearly had no such troubles. She effortlessly made her cake pops into an assortment of adorable cartoon characters, whilst I despairingly scattered way too many sprinkles on the rest of mine.
I had a lot of fun at the workshop, and I definitely learnt quite a lot for when I finally attempt to make my own cake pops. The lessons open to the public sometime in September, so book your spot before they all sell out. Because that happens. Fast.
Ming attended the cake pop workshop as a guest of Cupcake Central Workshop.

Omg awesome!!! I attended a cake pop lesson once too and it was the most fun. And, as you pointed out, test of will to resist. I may or may not have purposely “wrecked” a few of my own pieces just so I could eat them right away. Glad to hear you kids had a great time. Your creations are fantastic!

Thanks so much, there were some seriously talented people in that class there! I may or may not have shoved balls of ruined cake into my mouth when no one was watching :p

I’ll be glad to help except they’ll probably just end up worse than what you started off with :p What sort of cake pops are you making?
