Onigiri Norissong

120 Collins St
Melbourne, VIC 3000

Are you team sandwich or onigiri? I’m of course talking about the konbini staples one finds in Japan, and although I think there’s no reason to have to choose, I am personally very partial to the spicy cod roe onigiri as a quick and delicious way to start my day. And so that’s where Onigiri Norissong comes in. Though not open for breakfast, this hidden little spot does a roaring lunchtime trade that is frankly surprising, given how tucked away it is. It’s also insanely affordable, with onigiri starting from $5, and topping out at (shock horror) $9 each. If you really want to splash out, they also have some pre-made sushi and poke bowls.

Rating: 13/20 – channelling spirited away (this scene, specifically)
MapQuest: come in through collins st, then keep walking through the corporate lobby, past the lifts, all the way to the back.

Teriyaki Salmon ($7)/Spicy Stir-Fried Kimchi and Pork ($8)/Mentaiko & Takana ($9)

Unlike most places, there’s a whopping 15 flavours of onigiri to choose from at Norissong, as well as a daily special. Unfortunately they were out of the blue fin tuna, so it was the Teriyaki Salmon ($7), Spicy Stir-Fried Kimchi and Pork ($8), Mentaiko & Takana ($9). Made to order, these were exactly as described, and I mean that in the best way: it is a simple and quick meal that feels as good as home cooking. Just go ahead and pick your favourite filling, though if I were to recommend one of the three above, I’d say the Mentaiko & Takana – I love the umami brine of the pollock roe, combined with the spicy crunch of the pickled mustard greens against the backdrop of warm, freshly cooked rice.

Mushroom Miso Soup ($8)/Potato Salad ($8)

You can’t have onigiri without miso soup, but the Mushroom Miso Soup ($8) shouldn’t be missed regardless. The flavour profile is deeply savoury and umami, but with a lightness about it that renders it clean and soothing. The addition of mushrooms gives this a distinctly wintery feel, adding to its nourishing comfort. For something a little more filling, another side option is the Potato Salad ($8), which though nothing to write home about, is still tasty and very much enjoyable.
