Placements sucked. Working 9-5 for 3 weeks at $0/hour, and going home to be greeted by… study, frantically clamouring to be done. And hopefully still being able to get full 6 hours of sleep before doing it all again. It is ridiculously draining, and leaves minimal time for eating and even less time for blogging. And when I do blog, it’s rambling and incoherent. Thank goodness for unofficial editor K, who’ll happily pick out all my mistakes; one less thing for me to do. At least by the time I post this, placements will be a thing of the past. Until next year, anyway.
We were in Glen Waverley the week before this to eat at Mocha Jo’s, but I spotted Straits of Malacca across the road, so one week later, here we are.
Combination Hor Fun ($9.8)
Chris likes Combination Hor Fun ($9.8), and so Straits of Malacca served him a boatful of it. Happily, the quality wasn’t compromised by the sheer quantity. The noodles were fragrantly seared in a hot wok with soy sauce, and then covered with a slippery-smooth egg gravy. Generous pieces of chicken, seafood and fish cakes floated amongst the noodles in what was more soup than sauce but hey, we still ate it all.
Wonton Noodle Soup ($9.8)
Wonton Noodle Soup ($9.8)
My Wonton Noodle Soup ($9.8) was a lot less remarkable; a bit bland really, if it weren’t for the fiery jar of crispy chilli oil on the table. The noodles were limp and dull, the flavours of the soup ankle-deep, and the BBQ pork tasted more marinated than grilled. The wontons were a nice surprise though, almost identical to the kind mum makes, with a long, silky wrapper trailing behind. Shame I’ve been holding out all day for a chunky ones stuffed with prawn mince.
I like Petaling Street more for Malaysian food (if I’m not wandering around near Straits Cafe), but Straits of Malacca will easily feed 2 less hungry people for under $10, and there’s something to be said about that.
Rating: 12.5/20 – i ate a boat.

Mmmm that looks so good right now! It’s ridiculously cold all of a sudden. Have you been to Black Toro yet?

Not yet! I’ve been meaning to go over and over but for some reason I never manage! I think it’s probably because I only head to glen waverley for cheap Asian feeds, so I’ve got to change that! Have you been yet? Do you know if it’s any good, because it is rather pricey

I actually don’t like Straits or Petaling St – too many bad meals there. In general, I don’t like eating in Glen Waverley haha with the exception of a few places. I’ve been craving wonton noodles but nothing is ever as good as Mum’s cooking!

Shame to hear about straits and petaling street, maybe you just went on… all of the bad days? Though, are you referring to straits of malacca or straits cafe? Because if you mean the former, I would definitely recommend the latter; it comes with a seal of approval from many Malaysians I know

And of course, nothing is ever as good as mum’s cooking!

Some of the guys at training love Straits of Malacca – I don’t see what the fuss is about though. Straits Cafe might be an option though!

I think it’s a portion size thing; after all, post-training blokes are hungry blokes. A restaurant automatically gets bonus points if my dad is stuffed after the meal. Straits Cafe on the other hand – good portions and delicious to boot.
