Remember when the only non-Asian restaurant in Glen Waverley was Mocha Jo’s? Well get this – now there’s a Mexican tapas restaurant, a steakhouse, and a burger-and-yoghurt bar. YOMG! #Puns #ImSickCutMeSomeSlack

(1) Exterior

I clearly haven’t been to Glen Waverley for a while, because when I rocked up a couple weeks ago for a lazy dinner, I found not one, but TWO new restaurants lining Kingsway. Because I didn’t have my camera with me however, I had to wait a bit before I could try those restaurants out. And because I was more in the mood for burgers and fro-yo, rather than burgers and souvlaki, YOMG it was.

(3) Interior

YOMG turned out to be almost painfully trendy, and completely packed out at 6pm on Sunday. The music was a loud cross between pop and house, and… oh just look at the pictures, my head feels like it’s full of damp cotton wool and asbestos. Thank god this isn’t a fine dining review.

Yo My with Cheese ($9)

Yo My with Cheese ($9)

The classic Yo My with Cheese ($9) sat plump and perky in its little cardboard box. The first thing that struck me was the smokiness of the beef and the salty, half-melted cheese – definitely a good start. The salad was fresh, and the special sauce was creamy and flavoursome.

Unfortunately they were a bit too keen with the tomato sauce, and the result was cold ketchup pockets that overwhelmed the rest of the burger, making the taste one-dimensional. All in all, it was a solid burger that I enjoyed, but I felt that it was missing the crucial ‘wow’ element that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Bergerk ($12)

Bergerk ($12)

It’s not often (read: never) that I prefer a chicken burger over beef, but the Bergerk ($12) was rockin’. It was the smoky, spicy southern fried chicken patty that did it, complemented by the timeless combination of chipotle mayo and lettuce. It was a big mess, but it was worth every bit of sauce smeared on your cheeks.

American Fries ($6)

We also got a plate of American Fries ($6) because hey, why not? The fries were fluffy, topped with lashings of Heinz tomato sauce, fluoro American mustard, fake cheese sauce, and crispy bacon bits. It tasted exactly like ‘MURICA, and I ain’t even mad.

(4) Bar

And because we were already there, we may as well get some frozen yoghurt. The concept is exactly the same as all the other fro-yo bars around town – pick your yoghurt, add the toppings, and pay by weight. In this case, it’s $2.8/100g. The choice in topping was a little lacking, but I think that says more about how spoilt I’m getting than anything.

Green Tea Frozen Yoghurt with Mochi, Lychee Popping Pearls, Coconut

It’s Glen Waverley, so of course there’s green tea flavoured fro-yo. I got mine topped with a combination of lychee popping pearls, mochi, and coconut flakes. Though the yoghurt was unremarkable, and could’ve done with a stronger taste of green tea, the overall quality of the fro-yo and toppings were great, and I enjoyed my dessert.

Original Frozen Yoghurt with Brownie Pieces, Caramel Banana, Lychee Popping Pearls

Chris was all for the peanut butter or salted caramel flavours, but that was before he ate a burger and fries. So instead he got some of the original plain yoghurt with brownie pieces, caramel bananas, and lychee popping pearls. The yoghurt was creamy, but still had a good degree of tartness to it, and the gooey brownie pieces were faultless.

They also had milkshakes and chicken wings on the menu, and I wanted to have it all, especially the Shang-Fry with pulled pork, crispy shallots, and chilli. This burger may not make its way onto many (if any) best-of burger lists around Melbourne, but it’s a solid sandwich that I’m happy to have in my neighbourhood. Plus, it is way better than the kind of thing you could get anywhere in Melbourne just a few years ago. Like I said, I am one spoilt foodie.

Rating: 14/20 – BER-GERK! yes I only just got the joke.
This rating reflects my personal experience at the time of visit.

Wow it looks great! My sister was telling me about it last night. I never imagined that Glen Wav would get so trendy? But I did love Mocha Jo’s…
