Yes Five Guys is finally open in Australia, but why would you bother with that when you can get Cali-Styled burgers at Slim’s Quality Burgers for half the price? Slim’s is basically the place you go where you want the fast food experience, but also want to feel like an adult who has their stuff together. The burgers may be simple, but the ingredients are fresh, and the resulting sandwich actually tastes like sustenance. And the fact that you can get a burger made to order, along with fries, a drink, and maybe even a scoop of ice cream for less than a twenty in this economy? Priceless.
Rating: 12.5/20 – for everything else, there’s Slim’s.
The go-to: fried chicken burger, surprisingly.
The Works ($9.5) is about as big and as pricy as the burgers get here, unless you get all up in that customisation biz. And it’s actually pretty good, even if the beef and bacon could be a little more flavoursome. In fact, it tastes like a fresh, clean version of the Bacon Deluxe. Is that a good thing? You decide.
But if you’re only going to have one burger, make it the Slim’s Original Crispy Chicken ($8.5). The golden southern-styled fried chicken fillet, in all its nubbly, crunchy glory, is worth it alone. Stick it in a squishy bun with the trio of lettuce, tomato, and mayo, and you’ve got the makings of a classic.
And for sides? The Loaded Fries ($6) is a good one, topped with cheese, burger sauce, and sweet grilled onions. The fries themselves are a little undercooked but once covered in sauce, you can’t really tell.
