After a gruelling 3-hour exam that covered everything they’ve crammed into our heads over the last 6 months, I was ready to be reconstituted back into some semblance of a well-adjusted human, hopefully in time for my next 6-month chunk of study. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this, but K, my long-suffering regular dining companion, is also my longstanding blog post editor. I will admit to feeling a little bad about the poor grammar I’ve exposed him to over the years, but I do occasionally treat him to a nice meal to make up for it. And that balances things out nicely. Or so I tell myself. Having been a while since our last meal, I took this opportunity when I was last down in Melbourne to have brunch with K at Flovie Florist Café, the hot new opening by the owners behind the very popular White Mojo.
What’s your favourite brunch place in Sydney? For most of 2018, I’ve had precious little time to scope out the café scene in Sydney, with med school taking centre stage for literally 11 months of the year. But now that I’ve finally had some time to poke around, I realise that there are so many places I don’t even know where to start. How can I make sure that I’m not getting a dud? Or a place that’s prefers style (read: Instagram bait) over substance? Or a place that was popular 8 years ago, and is now just riding on its past successes without actually growing or improving?
I am the brunch-bringer in my family. Although my parents have boundless enthusiasm for newly opened Chinese restaurants and will basically try every single one they see within a 10km radius of their house, they’re a bit more timid when it comes to brunch. This is rather unfortunate, as they are big fans of brunch (who isn’t). So when I’m in town, I see it as equal parts obligation and privilege to take them out for a good bit of poached eggs and porridge.
Can you believe it’s been over a year since I’ve been on a brunch date with Chris, aka my other half? What with living in different cities for the majority of last year, and my always being too tired from/busy with study, going out for brunch became about as likely as me quitting medicine and going back to pharmacy. But finally, finally, the year was over, and we actually had some time and energy to go out on the weekend for a change. And seeing as we had business in Potts Point, Petrel Kitchen was where we headed.
After a hectic year of med school and the fervour that was final exams (which I passed by the way, so call me a second-year!), I was itching to get out onto my road trip holiday through New Zealand. And despite being told unanimously by everyone who has ever visited, I was still unprepared for just how stunningly beautiful of a country it was.
