Little Turtle

I love vegan food – there, I said it. But I feel like this turnabout is less due to any personal development on my part, and more attributable to the fact that vegan food in Sydney is a little magical. Ramen, Pizza, Laksa – you name it, and they can do a vegan version that tastes miraculously similar to its animal-containing alternative, and probably taste better to boot. I will take a little credit however; it wasn’t so long ago that I was denouncing vegan food in favour of fried chicken.

Pizza Madre

Here’s to the end of 2020 (well, at the time of writing anyway)! Although I can’t speak definitively for everyone, I’m pretty sure most people absolutely cannot wait to bid goodbye to this strange and uncomfortable year. And what better way is there to celebrate the end of this long, hard slog than with a pizza party? I don’t have a whole lot in the way of pizza options around my place, but a quick 20 minute drive towards the city gets me to Pizza Madre, which consistently makes its way onto best-of lists, despite being an entirely vegetarian operation. And although its name suggests something familiar and cosy, Pizza Madre is less of a mother, and more of an…

Chatkazz

When I travel, I am all about that street food. To me, there is no better way to guarantee that what you’re eating is the freshest, most traditional, and most delicious foods a culture has to offer. But whilst I’ve spent a good amount of my time eating around Asia, my knowledge of South-Asian street food is rather woeful. It comes as no surprise however that the good people of India love to eat, and whilst it’s not always easy to find Indian snacks at a restaurant, Chatkazz is one place where you won’t be left wanting.

Lonely Mouth

It’s been a long two months, but the blog is back! Socially-distanced, but undeniably back. Oh how I’ve missed going out to eat! Lonely Mouth opened pretty much on the cusp of coronavirus forcing us all into lockdown, so I was afraid that by the time we were allowed to emerge from our homes again, it would have fallen victim to the economical crash like so many other restaurants. Thankfully, that was not the case. They’ve kept things going with a steady stream of takeaway orders, and they’ve reopened for dinner as of last week. You do have to book via email for a strict 45-minute sitting, but once you’re there, you can feel safe in the knowledge that everyone…

Gigi Pizzeria

Vegan food may be getting up to some rather marvellous things in the last few years, but I’ve always drawn the line at vegan pizza. Surely a dish that mandates the addition of cheese in its most traditional form can’t possibly taste good without it, right? And frankly, if it weren’t for Jan and her recommendation of Gigi Pizzeria, I would’ve gone on happily believing the same forevermore. So what’s special about Jan and her recommendation for Gigi Pizzeria? For starters, not only does Jan know what she’s talking about in regard to food, she’s also an omnivore-turned-herbivore, so she knows what traditional pizza tastes like, and she promises that the vegan version at Gigi’s is just as good. And…

Golden Lotus Vegan

Sydney’s vegan scene is the bomb. Not only is there a wide variety with something for every occasion, they also really make the effort to get the food to taste genuinely good, as opposed just ‘good for what it is’. Even my token vegan foodie friend (yo Jillian!) agrees that the vegan food around here is rather special, and if that’s not high praise, I don’t know what is. One of the most popular casual vegan restaurants around Sydney is Golden Lotus Vegan, which serves up animal-free Vietnamese cuisine, with just a smidge of Thai and Chinese thrown in. Normally I’d avoid places like this, as I usually find the food to be overpriced and uninspired. But of course, Sydney…
